The April Revolution of Nepal will go down in world history as the first major revolution of the 21st century. Nothing like this has happened in recenty memory in any country. Not in Eastern Europe, not nowhere. It was like the entire country poured out into the streets for 19 days. The entire country was shut down. People were out literally in all towns, all villages, all cities, people from all walks of life.

18 Days Of April Revolution: Victory

There are many lessons for the rest of the world from this April Revolution. The local democracy activists have to take the lead. It helps immensely if those activists are organized in political parties. It helps if all those parties have forged a strong alliance. And ultimately it boils down to getting people to come out into the streets, day in, day out, in large numbers. That reads like a formula.

Democracy Spreading Mechanism
The Demosphere Manifesto

Bridge Activists
Immigration Makes Economy Sense, Democracy, Justice, Family Sense
Can't Take Back Congress Without Strong On Defense
Long War
The French Revolution And DFNYC
Nepal Message To Top Democrats (December 11, 2005)

But there also are many lessons to be learned from the Nepal experience. The taste of victory is sweet, but we still have to face the fact that there are many other countries that are still not democracies.

Unique

Each country's experience will be slightly unique. There is no one magic formula that can be replicated everywhere. But there is a framework, and there is room for play by many domestic and global actors. The next attempt to spread democracy always has to be better than the last one. Can we do it faster? Can we do it with fewer casualties? Can we be more supportive from outside?

Moral Support

The Nepal experience was that the people in Nepal wanted moral support more than anything else. They were not exactly asking for fax machines and computers. They were asking for letters of support, especially from people holding public office, but also from anyone else. It meant a world to them that the Nepali diaspora was staunchly behind them.

Logistical Suppport

We could have done it one better. The revolution could have been launched much sooner if there was better communication. It does boil down to money, message, organization.
