Virginia Tech Shooting: Hunting Must Be Regulated

Nepali students at Virginia Tech shocked but safe NepalNews "I spent a lot of time yesterday (within hours of the two incidents) to be in touch with Nepalese (students, staff, and families). Based on my conversation and meetings with Nepalese here, it is my understanding that no Nepali individual has been injured or dead," Gnyawali told Nepalnews. ....... Dr. Gnyawali, who is the only Nepali faculty at Virginia Tech, has been teaching there for the past 10 years. "It is a wonderful university and used to be a very peaceful one," he said.
I have been to the campus. My high school classmate Tirtha who was a Ph.D student there showed me around. I still have a friend there. And so I had to shoot a quick email her way, ccing it to her husband in Chicago, also a friend: Please confirm you are okay. She is Russian, he is Albanian, college friends. I have been to the town many times. It is a big fancy university in a small hilly town by a very busy interstate.

Americans are fat. That is the first thing I think about whenever I get into thinking about health care as a policy. And, no, it is not genetics. It is to do with unhealthy eating and exercise habits. There is a need for a culture shift. Obesity is the source of most diseases.

Similarly, there is another obvious, glaring truth. The gun laws in this country are insane. I understand hunting. Although I prefer people shot with their camera and not their gun. But if they do have to shoot with their gun, the gun must be limited to the sport of hunting. That part I understand. And this is supposed to be a country of rule of law. Citizens are not supposed to take law into their hands. Law enforcement is a state function. And I totally understand why police officers have to carry guns. That I understand.

What I don't understand is why it is legal to manufacture and sell and carry all sorts of firearms which have no purpose other than to kill people. Most are designed to kill many people all at once. If these are not meant to kill but are only meant to be toys, maybe only non-lethal bullets should be sold. But what does it mean to sell lethal bullets?

If the right to bear arms is mentioned somewhere in the constitution, it should be scrapped. 1776 you were worried about wild animals in your backyard. Back then slavery was also protected by the constitution. There is a right to free speech, and a right to peaceful assembly, but no right to bear arms. I don't read that anywhere in the Universal Declaration Of Human Rights, which supercedes all constitutions of all countries all over the world.

Hunting should be a regulated sport. Police officers should be the only ones allowed to carry guns. And the right to bear arms has to be scrapped from the constitution.

People will get depressed, sure. People will get angry. People will get mad at each other. But they should not have the option to go buy a handgun for a few hundred dollars and go on a killing spree.

Health Care Options

(1) Inject market forces into the private health care sector. The fact that health care companies do not cut down on paperwork and move on to electronic options is proof they are not competing with each other to bring even the obvious costs down. That alone has meant health care is 30% more expensive than it should be.

(2) When you bring the costs down, premiums will likely go down. More people will be able to afford insurance.

(3) Organize the insured Ralph Nader style: consumer protection. The insurance companies routinely deny health care to those already insured. They just flat out deny. Make it easier for people to shop around.

(4) Move towards universal health care, sure. But that can't be standalone.

(5) Focus on wellness, on preventive health care. Both should be incentivised. People who work hard to stay healthy, to eat right, to exercise, to get the rest should see monetary benefits.

The key thing is not lack of good ideas. The good ideas are all out there. The challenge is so how do you sell it. The best way would be to keep the debate as transparent as possible at all stages and get the masses to be part of it all over the country. That is how you sell.

7 Point Agenda For New York City

My Back Against The Wall

I love this city so much, I figured I would set a few things straight. This list is by no means comprehensive, and the order of things mentioned is kind of random. But here goes:

(1) Superior Management. The self-made billionaire Mayor has set the standards rather high. Followup Mayors will have big shoes to fill. Most of the time it is simply about delivering, basic delivery. Is the garbage being picked up?

(2) Political Reform. Inject democracy and transparency at all levels. Where Bloomberg has lacked is he has not done much house cleaning in the political department. He likes to say he switched parties because as a Republican candidate he would not be beholden to various Democratic interest groups. That is a sad thing to say about the dominant party in the city that is perhaps the progressive capital of the country and the world. Mike plain gave up. He did not even try.

Expand voting rights. There are 1.2 million New Yorkers right now who can't vote. That is wrong.

(3) Crime Control. Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime. For a big city, this might be the number one concern. This is about tough love. Like Amitabh Bachchan said once, "I will save my compassion for the tsunami victims." This is about declaring a War On Domestic Violence. This is about pay increase for police officers. This is about engineering a better ethnic and gender composition of the police. This is about community policing. This is about better fighting organized crime. You play by their rules. You get organized too. You go after the big dogs. Big city should not automatically mean a high crime rate. Rudy did pretty good in this department. But his excesses were unnecessary. He got carried away.

(4) The Subway. Long term it is a good idea to increase the total number of miles the subway runs. Good thing work has started on the Second Avenue subway. A long term view also has to be taken in terms of the outer boroughs. There is a major need to upgrade the subway. Filth is not a status symbol like some New Yorkers complain when they are in DC: "This Metro is not dirty enough." The subway is magic on wheels. It is the subway that gives the city its name as "the city that never sleeps." How can the experience be enhanced? Paint every inch of wall that the subway riders see. Brighten things up. The current scenario leads to depression among some New Yorkers who might already be on the edge. If people do spend so much time on the subway, let's try and make it a pleasant experience. All train stations should similarly be beautified. They should be made pleasant. Put up art work on the walls. Play some soft, soothing music. Take the noise out. We should get rid of the wheels. Trains can be made to float on air. The technology has been around a while. Summary: Enhance the sight, take away the sound, take away the stink.

Public transportation has to be enhanced overall. There is the bus, and there is the cab. We need to also have something in between those two. And cabbies should be allowed to keep more of the money they make. The city takes out too much. That is racism. Mostly brown folks are at the receiving end.

(5) Wireless Broadband. This is a nobrainer. The sooner this happens the better. I would push for free, ad supported type. This more than any single thing would be like New York City 2.0. This is the next subway, only better.

This will also allow us to think in terms of next generation jobs, companies, industries.

(6) Education. Lifelong. Ahead of the state and national curve.

(7) Health. Universal. Ahead of the state and national curve.

Wash Mugabe Away With A Revolution

Spread Democracy, Revolution

Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe is the stinkiest head of state on the planet right now. That jerk has to be pushed out of power. The sooner the better. To his credit, he lead his country's independence from Britain. He is also on record expressing active empathy with some of the inner cities in America. Inner city blacks do have it tough in America, and not all African heads of state act like they know that. But then it is down the slope thenon. This guy's has been a rule of terror for two and half decades now. If he does not like you, he will send bulldozers to raze your shantytown. His mismanagement is so total, Zimbabwe's economy has actually been shrinking. A low growth rate is one thing, but to actually go ahead and shrink?

Spread Democracy, Revolution

This is one of those dictators who actually conducts elections. I would not be surprised if he also challenged Bush to a televised debate like Saddam did. He is up for reelection in 2008 again.

Spread Democracy, Revolution

The opposition in Zimbabwe is disunited. That is a big problem. And their strategy seems to be to beat him at the polls. That is a misguided strategy. In a country where the opposition leaders get beat up like they were petty criminals in a pre-rule of law country, the regime does not hold elections. It rubber stamps the status quo.

Spread Democracy, Revolution

The goal of the opposition has to be to create a unity platform and then shoot for a mass movement. Mugabe's 2008 polls must be boycotted. Instead the demand should be to organize an all party government that would hold elections to a constituent assembly that will give the country a new constitution.

Spread Democracy, Revolution

The ground rules are broken. The constitution is faulty, big time.
