I had a message a few days ago in my inbox from MYD, Manhattan Young Dems. I was aware of their election day slated for the 23rd, but looks like they also have a few other events. I used to be a DFNYC frequenter, then I became a Drinking Liberally frequenter. I was thinking of switching from Drinking Liberally to Laughing Liberally, but I don't know when they restart their Monday evening labs, or if they even do that in winter. So I guess January goes to MYD. I don't want to become a Member, let alone run for office, but MYD meetings do stand out. I really like watching Kristina Hoke's power action. At MYD the president is a woman. The vice president will soon be a woman, Liz. And Alison is also an officer. MYD is the only progressive organization in Manhattan I know of that is clearly run by women. That is great.
I went to their last meeting. Some pollster guy was the guest speaker. I think he has signed up for Edwards. I interjected twice to make clear my support for Obama. My enthusiasm must have showed. At the bar afterwards, Liz pointed out to me candidates have not announced yet. Liz was in New Hampshire in an official capacity for Joe Lieberman in 2004 - Joe, 2004! I think that is so impressive. "People would point out a chair and say, Carter sat in that chair."
There was Michelle from Orlando. Her aunt back there is taking care of her horse, and she is hoping to get a MBA at Columbia. And Jenny from Chicago who went to U of Illinois Urbana Champaign. "I been there. There is this library, and this beautiful rectangle ..."
"The Quad."
"Larry Ellison went there for a year, and then he dropped out because his mother, the mother who adopted him, died."
We discussed technology.
Met PD. He is ethnic Indian, 23. Makes big bucks as a banker. Terry McAuliffe knows him. "Once in a while he will email me." He says he can raise $100,000. "It will take me a year, but I can do it."
"I grew up middle class, so I like to spend on myself," he said and showed me his $5000 cellphone hardware. "You can run a sports car over it, and it will not get damaged. I have tried."
His parents are divorced. Mom now lives in London.
Kristina showed up. "He will write about you at his blog." She misses Warner on the campaign trail. I guess Warner is her "ethnic Indian." She is from Virginia.

MYD MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
We’re looking for mentors! Manhattan Young Democrats has teamed up with Global Enterprise Academy (GEA), a high school in the Bronx. Each month, through e-mail, an MYD member will discuss public policy with a 10th grader at GEA. The goal of the program is to encourage political knowledge and participation among youth. The commitment is small (just 30 minutes a month), but the impact could be indelible. For more information, please contact Zz Twainy at zsquared73@hotmail.com
MYD IS READY TO HELP THE DEMS WIN ANOTHER STATE SENATE SEAT!
Eliot Spitzer's appointment of the Republican State Senator Michael Balboni to homeland security czar, gives us a chance to take back the 7th State Senate District (northwest Nassau County) for the Dems - a district with more registered Dems than Republicans. The Dems inched closer to regaining control of the State Senate with the victory of Andrea Stewart-Cousins last month - a race that MYD was heavily involved in. Now we're only three seats away from a majority and this district is close by on Long Island! If you'd like to be involved in our efforts to take back this seat, please email info@manhattanyoungdems.org!
